2.2 Million liters per day Treatment Plant for Combined Tannery Effluent
at Ambur, Vellore District

Common effluent treatment plant

The tertiary pilot treatment plant and the colorless treated effluent
in the glass beaker held by Er. S. Saktheeswaran

Client Amburtec, Ambur and Pranjali Projects Bangalore.
Project To demonstrate colour and odour removal from tannery effluents
Role Consultants for the following services

1. Characterization of effluent quality
2. Evaluation of existing oxidation ditch system for kinetics
3. Evalution of oxygen transfer capacity of aerators
4. Laboratory studies on enzyme induced enhancement of treatment.
5. Commissioning of enzyme added bio system in existing plant.
6. Design and constructin supervision of pilot plant for tertiary treatment
7. Commissioning and validation of pilot plant for continuous operation.
8. Handling the visits of Pollution control Board personnel and officers
9. Training the in-house staff for self-sustaining of the pilot plant.
Status The assignment started in August 97 and was successfully completed in April 98.
Results The plant demonstrated for the first time in the country that tannery effluent can be treated to totally clear, colourless and odouless quality for appearance of treated effluent like mineral water. Some of the key parameters of the raw effluent and the treated water quality obtained in the tertiary plant in the field are as follows:

Parameters BOD COD pH Chromium Colour Odour SS
Raw effluent 900 / 1500 2000 / 3500 7.4 / 8.3 35 / 45 Grayish Offensive 5000 / 10000
Final effluent 7 / 10 140 / 210

7.4 / 7.6

BDL nil nil 10 / 20

Samples taken during April 1998 after the pilot plant demostration of our recommanded process at Thutthipet tannery Common effluent treatment plant.
